About the Bezel Setting

The bezel setting is one of the oldest techniques in fine jewelry — and one we have made our own. Where prong settings lift a stone up and out, a bezel wraps it in a thin rim of metal, creating a smooth, uninterrupted silhouette that is as practical as it is beautiful. At Bracken Jewelers, we handcraft our bezel engagement rings specifically around each stone, making every ring a one-of-a-kind piece.

What Is a Bezel Setting?

A bezel setting encircles the center stone with a custom-fitted band of metal that holds it securely without the use of prongs. The result is a clean, low-profile ring with no edges to snag and no prongs to bend or break over time. Our bezel engagement rings are crafted in gold and platinum.

There are two primary variations:

Full bezel — the metal rim encircles the entire stone, creating a seamless, sculptural look that emphasizes the stone's shape and offers maximum protection.

Half bezel (or partial bezel) — the metal frames two sides of the stone while leaving the others open, allowing more light to enter and increasing the stone's brilliance while maintaining a modern, minimalist feel.

Both styles work beautifully across a range of stone shapes: round, oval, emerald, pear, and marquise among them.

Why the Bezel Setting Endures

The bezel has been part of fine jewelry for centuries, and for good reason.

Security and durability. The bezel is widely considered the most protective of all engagement ring settings. With no prongs to catch on fabric or bend over time, your center stone is more likely to remain exactly where it belongs. For this reason, bezel settings are especially appreciated by individuals who are more active and a little rougher with their hands.

Minimalist sophistication: timeless with a modern edge. The bezel offers a clean, polished look. It is a timeless design that speaks quietly and says everything. Rooted in ancient jewelry traditions and refined through our decades of experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A bezel engagement ring features a center stone secured by a thin rim of metal rather than traditional prongs. The metal is shaped precisely to the stone, holding it flush and flat against the band. The result is a smooth, clean silhouette with excellent stone protection.

  • Yes — generally speaking. Because the stone is fully or partially encircled by metal rather than held by individual prongs, there are fewer points of vulnerability. Prongs can bend, snag, or wear down over time. A well-crafted bezel setting holds your stone securely with minimal maintenance.

  • Nearly all shapes work well. Oval and rectangular cuts are especially beautiful in bezel settings, valued for the way the metal rim accentuates their curves and lines. Round stones remain a classic choice, and pear and marquise shapes can take on an especially bold and unique quality when bezel set.

  • A full bezel completely encircles the stone on all sides, offering maximum protection and a seamless, sculptural look. A half bezel, sometimes called a partial bezel, frames the stone on at least two sides. The partial bezel tends to feel more open and lends itself well to unique interpretations, while still retaining most of the security benefits of a full bezel.

  • The bezel is a particularly good fit if you value clean, intentional design. It also suits anyone with an active lifestyle, or who simply wants something a little less delicate. That said, the best setting is always the one that feels most like you.
