About Our California Gold
The gold flake that decorates each “Copa de Oro” print is from the Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California, where we have a claim on the Yuba River and operate one of the only fully-permitted gold mines in the state. It is the same gold we use to make our California Gold jewelry.
Behind the Name
“Copa de Oro” translates to “cup of gold” and was the name early Spanish explorers gave to the California poppy flower because of its bright, golden-orange, cup-shaped petals.
We found this name fitting for this design not only because it is of that same well-known vibrant native flower, but because on every print, the poppy cups a real gold flake at its center.
Making the Print
After receiving so much love for our California Gold story this year through social media, we recognized the need to make this token of the Golden State more accessible–but wanted it to carry beauty, meaning and purpose just like our jewelry: thoughtfully designed and crafted.
So we chose an iconic image (the California poppy) and a meaningful cause (the California Native Plant Society) and carved a rubber block. The final design – a bright orange poppy on textured deckled-edge paper, was the product of many image and medium iterations featuring other beloved native California creatures and plants, watercolors, acrylic paint and colored pencils.
